Porter Smith's musical life is an overflow of finely woven melodies, odd rhythms, ancient, romantic sensibility, and lilting voices. His regard for the female voice is apparent throughout his twenty year career, but never so realized as in his newest CD release, HOME PORT. In this effort, Porter presents a new song cycle and becomes the tenor and 7-string guitar accompanist of a vocal trio, featuring soprano Megan Longwell, alto Victoria Marga, and cellist Patricia Santos. The result is a classically-spirited singers' showcase that beckons '70s folk, Baroque, and heralds a progressive form that Porter calls 'Oomaloo'. Oomaloo is a fictitious seaside place - the land of seven waterfalls - where the natural, native music is in a balanced but odd rhythm, and the vocal expressions are shared by male and female alike. This is the spirit of HOME PORT, a long-lived musical dream of Porter's that he seems to have fulfilled in 2013.
